St. Benedict in Nebraska City Welcomes all To Apple Jack Weekend Celebration

NEBRASKA CITY (SNR) - Residents of Nebraska City look forward to Sept. 15, to happily welcome all outsiders who regularly or perhaps for the first time come to experience the different fun activities presented for them during AppleJack weekend in Nebraska City.

Father Mark Cyza, pastor of St. Benedict Parish, said some interesting and fun opportunities include watching the parade on Central Avenue, shopping and browsing around the many open doors featuring antiques, floral, specialty gifts and clothing shops.

He said St. Benedict specialties throughout the day include Hispanic dancers as part of the parade, delicious homemade fruit pies served with ice cream, and fruit-flavored snow cones concession stands.

A way of bringing guests together is the "South of the Border" Hispanic meal, held at St. Benedict’s church hall, 411 5th Rue, Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m.

"As you approach the building you will encounter the mouth watering aroma coming from the kitchen," Father Cyza said. Upon entering, he said, the women will be scurrying in the kitchen area busily preparing beef tacos, stuffed ‘chichorran,’ beef gorditas, enchiladas and taquitos. Guests may apply mild, medium or hot salsa according to taste.

In addition, the meal will include pork tamales, beef burritos, tostadas and Columbian "empanadas" (chicken turnovers). The meal may end with postre (dessert) of arroz con leche (sweet rice with milk), pie, or chocoflan (Mexican cake).

During the meal, entertainment will be provided by dancers in colorful dress, with their folk dancing from Mexico and San Salvador.

Father Cyza, invites all to enjoy a pleasant evening.

"Eat good food, very reasonably priced, and experience great entertainment all in support of earning funds to help defray the cost of college tuition for interested young Hispanics," he said.
