Diocesan Youth Ministry: Canoe Trips Now a Tradition

A great tradition began as a one-time need. In the summer of 1996, Father Ronald Homes wanted to help fill the gap left by a cancelled retreat.

So he began making calls, getting volunteers to help drive and cook. That summer, a grass-roots program began what is now the annual Diocesan Canoe Trip. Father Homes is currently preparing for the 15th consecutive year of canoeing the Niobrara River.

The trip is offered for young adults who are beginning their high school sophomore year throughout their college career. Highlights of the trip include Rocky Ford, the breathtaking Smith Falls, and fun at Fritz Island. The retreat is filled with camping, canoeing, rosary, talks and daily Mass.

The views bring to mind not only the beauty of their creation, but also the Creator Himself.

The canoe trip has become a favorite of many of southern Nebraska’s young adults as well as a regular summer destination for numerous diocesan priests and seminarians.

The Niobrara River was named a “Top 10 canoeing river in the US” by Backpacker Magazine. It has also made a showing in the “Adventure 100” by National Geographic.

This year’s trips are scheduled for July 25-27 and 27-29. Spaces are still available for those interested. Additionally, volunteer drivers and chaperones are needed to help serve our young people.
