Lincoln man creates realistic crucifix

LINCOLN (SNR) – “Devotion to the Passion is not an obsession with suffering,” writes Seth Odgaard on his website, RealisticCrucifix.com, “it is a yearning for Love, the greatest act of Love the world will ever know.

“If you find in your heart an echo of that yearning, perhaps this crucifix is for you.”

Odgaard, of St. Peter Parish in Lincoln, launched the site to make available a crucifix that depicts a “full and accurate depiction of the wounds and suffering of Christ,” and to encourage people to “think about what really happened in the crucifixion.”

His mission to find such a crucifix came after his own ‘reversion’ to the Catholic faith. During a lengthening search for a realistic crucifix, he came across the story of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, a 19th century nun whose visions of the lives and deaths of Jesus and many saints are recounted in the book, “The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.”

“Her account of the Passion is, simply, moving,” Odgaard said. “It is profound and full and unforgettable. When I read that book, my heart moved, and kept moving.”

The international search spanned more than two years, he recounts on his website, “though it feels much longer.”

Odgaard finally found an artist who understood his vision for the project in Lincoln – a God-send, he writes – and Tom Meyers’ resulting work of art is a 21-inch tall and 13.5-inch wide poly-resin sculpture. Each is hand-painted by the original sculptor – an arduous, 12-hour project for each copy.

The crucifix is available for sale on the website. In addition to a 7% return of net proceeds to charity, the cross is currently offered at 10% off through Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27. Full details and additional photos of the crucifix are available at the site, RealisticCrucifix.com.
