LINCOLN (SNR) – St. Patrick Parish in Lincoln will host a Veterans Day Mass Nov. 11 in honor of all who have served in the United States armed forces.
The event is sponsored by the St. Patrick Knights of Columbus Council 13576.
Father Troy Schweiger, pastor of St. Patrick, will celebrate the Mass at 7 p.m. in the parish’s new church at 6111 Morrill Ave., Lincoln.
Veterans are encouraged to attend in uniform, but the Mass is open to all. In fact, “children would benefit by seeing some real heroes” by attending the Mass, said organizer Richard Zierke.
This is the parish’s second annual Veterans Day Mass. The first was celebrated last year in the school gymnasium, while the church was under construction. More than 75 people attended in 2014, and now that the new church is completed, parishioners are encouraging many more to attend.
After the Mass, a flag-folding ceremony will be held in the gymnasium as a group participation event, with the assistance of the University of Nebraska ROTC Color guard. Zierke will invite people from the crowd to take part in folding a number of 6x10-foot flags – with about 10 people per flag.
“After each fold,” Zierke said, “words are read to what each fold means. The flag folding ceremony represents the same religious principles on which our country was originally founded.”
Food and drinks will follow in the gym. With questions, please call Richard Zierke, 402-570-6190.
