Benkelman/Stratton CYO brings back ‘Cajun Boil’ event

BENKELMAN (SNR) - The Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) class of St. Joseph Parish in Benkelman and St. Joseph Parish in Stratton held a “Cajun Boil” fundraiser March 25 at the Legion Hall in Benkelman.

The event, which was a popular annual gathering in years past, had not been held since 2008, but the CYO decided to hold the dinner again to help raise funds for a mini-pilgrimage in July.

The meal included all-you-can-eat crab legs, shrimp, sausage, potatoes and corn on the cob for $35. About 100 guests were in attendance and people from as far away as Denver showed up for the feast.

Katie Dubas, youth director for the nine parishes of the Grant Deanery, said the meal was a resounding success. She said many participants requested that the CYO make this an annual event again.

Veterans of the Cajun boil from years past even “came prepared with their butter warmers, cracking utensils and crab forks,” she said.

CYO moms Julie Jones and Sonya Auffet spearheaded the night with help from other parents. The CYO members set up the tables and served the food to guests.

“A big thank you to all the participants – workers and eaters who made this possible,” Dubas said. “We appreciate the support of our youth!”
