FRIEND (SNR) – Father Lawrence Stoley, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Friend presented awards Sept. 10 to students who participated in the parish CCD summer reading program.
Children of the parish participated in the program during June, July, and August. Books were chosen from a list of books recommended by Dr. Terrence Nollen in the Southern Nebraska Register, “Children’s Literature Bookshelf.”
Dr. Nollen, who teaches at St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward, has written reviews of children’s books for the Register for nearly 11 years.
He started the column after discussing with a parent how difficult it was to find good books for children, which do not contain ‘lessons’ which are contrary to the faith.
“I try to use a mix of books: biography, historic fiction, different things,” he said in a 2016 interview. “My purpose is to give readers and parents a book that builds them up spiritually and emotionally, and is enjoyable to read.”
For the Friend CCD summer reading program, each book was assigned an approximate grade level, as well as a number of points depending on the book’s difficulty and length.
Students read the books and then wrote summaries of them, including moral lessons they learned from the books.
Points were tallied up at the end of the program. The students each read one of their reports at a parish coffee Sept. 10, and Father Stoley presented the awards.
