SEWARD (SNR) – The Godteens of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Parish in Seward attended their annual retreat Sept. 16-17 at Camp Rivercrest.
Godteens is a ministry to high school students – Godteens – that includes education in the faith with social activites and guidance from a married couple as leaders – Godparents. The Godparent coordinator is Carmen Brown and her co-coordinators are Jason and Kathy Summa.
The retreat was planned and led by the SVDP Godparent Team. Brown said the seniors are instrumental in the planning process each year.
“Our retreat is early in the school year so our teens and Godparents have the opportunity to renew their relationship with Jesus, and grow stronger in their Catholic Faith,” she said.
The retreats consist of guest speakers, confessions, Mass, Eucharistic adoration, praying the rosary around a campfire and lots of team-building activities.
“One of the various observations the Godparents hear from their teens every year is ‘we want more time in Eucharistic Adoration,’” Brown reported. “It’s difficult to put into words the grace-filled experience we have with our Godteens at retreat. We are blessed.”
Father Rafael Rodriguez, dean of men and teacher at St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward, was the retreat master. Father Rodriguez and seminarian Scott Nemec gave a talk on their vocations and their pilgrimage to Camino de Santiago, the Way of St. James pilgrimage to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain.
Guest speakers were Beau and Ann Wagner from Colorado. Ann was involved with Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) for several years.
Father John Rooney and Father Maurice Current came to the retreat to hear confessions with Father Rodriguez. Tania Breiner and Lisa Elkins assisted with the retreat as well.
Senior Godparents are Shane and Abbie Baack and Tom and Emily O’Brien. Junior Godparents are Dennis and Karen Broadwell and Brandon and Lisa Lindau. Sophomore Godparents are Doug and Kris Lewis and Ed and Lily Gonzalez. Freshmen Godparents are Randy and Jill Bierbaum and Mark and Lisa Peery. Craig and Kari Jakub serve a junior-senior group and Zach and Kim Zegers a freshman-sophomore group.
