Statement on the recent tornado destruction in Oklahoma

Earlier this week, a tornado tore through communities, schools, and homes in the area surrounding Oklahoma City.  Twenty-four people were killed, and more than 200 were injured.

With the people of Southern Nebraska, I extend my heartfelt sympathy to those whose lives were impacted, and those who lost friends, neighbors, and family members.  The Diocese of Lincoln prays for the repose of the deceased souls.  “We do not mourn like those who have no hope.”  Instead, we mourn in the fervent hope of the resurrection, which conquers death, suffering, and destruction.

We pray that the Lord will hold all those affected in His loving embrace.

Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska will coordinate financial donations from those who wish to help after this disaster. I have given pastors in our diocese permission to conduct special collections this weekend and next for this purpose.  After that time, donations will continue to be collected by CSS and forwarded to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City (
