Statement on the Election of Pope Francis

The Diocese of Lincoln rejoices with the Universal Church on the election of Pope Francis as the 265th Successor of Saint Peter.

Our new Holy Father is a man of deep prayer, humility and absolute fidelity to the doctrine and discipline of the Catholic Church. He is a Latin American with Italian roots, who studied in Germany. He understands the plight of the poor and has a real heart for the New Evangelization.

I would like at this time, too, to express my gratitude to all the people of the Diocese of Lincoln, and throughout the world, who prayed for the Cardinals during the conclave to elect the Pope.

Please join me in celebrating this momentous occasion. I will celebrate the 5 p.m. Mass at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ (3500 Sheridan Blvd., Lincoln) today, Wednesday, March 13.
