LINCOLN (SNR) – “Backstage,” an original musical performed by S.T.A.G.E. Theatre, will be performed June 21, 22, 28, 29 at 7 p.m., and June 30 at 2 p.m.; all at the Pius X High School Learning/Performing Arts Center, 6000 A St., Lincoln.
The unique musical presents things “from the backstage-forward,” allowing the audience to see Broadway from an entirely different point of view!
Written and directed by Lee Hotovy, the comedy uses the talents of Rose Seeman and Mike Zeleny as music directors, along with the choreography of Karrie Seeman. Students, age 9 to young adult will present the piece with parodied versions of famous musicals including “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Annie,” “Newsies” and “The Music Man.”
A “phantom” appears, haunting the theater and stealing props. Chaos ensues, while cast and crew, stumble through show after show, with fewer and fewer props. To make matters worse, a demanding director and theater owner place an ultimatum on cast and crew: “Get along, or the place will close!” Roger, the backstage manager, and Barbara, the prop master, come to feathery blows before Emerson, a fired actor, steps in to help. Roger stews, while Barbara and Emerson find camaraderie through their love of props. Eventually, the trio discover the power of kindness and come up with a plan to save the show and the theater.
The fun musical was based on the spiritual writings of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
