Father Patrick Lyons dies at 96

LINCOLN (SNR) – Father Patrick Lyons, a retired priest of the Diocese of Lincoln, died Nov. 25.

He was 96 and had celebrated the 70th anniversary of his ordination June 24.

Father Lyons was ordained a priest in Dublin, Ireland in 1945. Due to the abundance of priests in Ireland, Father Lyons became a missionary to America and came to the Diocese of Lincoln in 1946. He served 25 years as pastor of St. Michael Parish in Hastings, and also served at parishes in Blue Hill, Falls City, Hebron, Kenesaw and Lincoln.

In 1997, Father Lyons retired. He resided at Bonacum House for retired priests in Lincoln for 18 years. This spring he moved to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.

Emeritus Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz celebrated a funeral Mass Dec. 1 in the Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln. Priests of the Diocese of Lincoln concelebrated. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. Butherus-Maser and Love Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Father Lyons is survived by a niece, nephew and cousin.
