New acolytes assist growing school

LINCOLN (SNR) – Bishop James Conley installed three new acolytes at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ Sept. 13.

Cathedral School principal Jeremy Ekeler and teacher Scott Svatos, who both have children in the school, and school parent Jeff Danek participated in training with rector Msgr. Robert Tucker and were installed at the school’s daily Mass by the bishop, with the assistance of master of ceremonies Father Michael Zimmer. The timing is unconventional in that most acolytes are installed in one of two ceremonies each spring – one in Lincoln and one in McCook.

“Scott, Jeff and I have all been wanting to take this step,” Ekeler explained, “so the need of our priests (to distribute Communion), plus our sense of being called to this led to the idea of this installation by Bishop Conley.”

Ekeler further explained that in most past years, three priests and an acolyte were available to distribute Communion at the school’s daily Masses, but only Msgr. Tucker and assistant pastor Father Justin Fulton are available for the school Masses this year – Cathedral Parish has four daily Masses on weekdays – and they needed more acolyte assistance.

“Furthermore,” he pointed out, “our student population is up 10%, which means even more children receiving the Holy Eucharist; a great thing!”

The three new acolytes will assist as needed at the school’s daily Masses, and this winter will join the full acolyte training offered each year by the Diocese of Lincoln.
