The Nebraska High School Theatre Academy (NHSTA) has announced the award-winners for outstanding performance and technical achievements in theater across the state more than 90 Nebraska high schools, more than 8,000 students and their musical productions. The cast and crew of Lourdes Central Catholic’s 2019 musical, My Fair Lady, is honored with five awards; Outstanding Actress in a lead role - Piper Monson, Outstanding Actor in a lead role-Luke Partsch, Outstanding Actress in a supporting role-Cathy Shawhan, Outstanding Ensemble and Outstanding Overall Production. Piper Monson was also nominated as a finalist for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards Finalist. One actor and one actress from the Nebraska finalists will be announced at the awards showcase to represent Nebraska and travel to New York City and perform in the "Jimmy Awards" a Tony-style award show.
The Nebraska High School Theatre Awards supports and celebrates musical theater education in Nebraska high schools. Culminating in a Tony Awards®-inspired showcase, the program offers free master classes with Broadway teaching artists, feedback from performing arts professionals, free tickets to touring Broadway shows when available, performance and audition experiences. Piper Monson and Luke Partsch will be featured performers at the NHSTA Awards show on Friday, June 7th. They, along with Cathy Shawhan, will receive an award statue on the Orpheum stage that evening.
Musical performances are evaluated by adjudicators who are professionals in the theatre industry. The adjudicators provide educationally focused feed-back and score various production elements within the show such as acting, singing, dancing, scene changes, lighting design, sound design, flow of the show and characterization. These scores were used to determine award recipients in various categories.
