ACT scores for the Class of 2017 demonstrate continued academic excellence at Pius X Catholic High School.
The average ACT score for Pius X increased by three-tenths of a point over last year. This means the school's composite ACT score – the combination of English, math, reading and science scores - has risen a full point in five years, from 23.8 in 2013 to 24.8 in 2017. This year's score is 3.4 points higher than the state composite average.
Pius X principal, Tom Korta, points out that the five-year trends are consistent with the school's mission to "enrich the mind, heart and soul of each student…"
"In these five years, on average 95% of our graduating class have taken the ACT. While I am happy to see our average scores climb, I am even more edified to see that we have moved from 44% to 51% of our students meeting the college readiness benchmarks in all four subject areas, compared to the state average which has remained steady at 28%. This growth suggests that we are doing a better job of reaching the broad range of students that attend Pius."
The ACT is a curriculum-based measure of college readiness based on benchmarks, and are intended to help students, parents and educators understand the meaning of test scores. Here are more key points:
- English scores continue to be a strong point for Pius X students. Of the 292 students in the Class of 2017 that took the ACT, 90 percent met the college readiness benchmark.
- Pius X has shown growth in the percentage of students who met those benchmarks in math, reading and science scores, improving 4, 3 and 2 points better, respectively, over the past five years.
- The percentage of students meeting STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) benchmarks has risen by 10 percentage points over five years.
While Korta is pleased with the results, he believes that the school is poised to see continued growth in the years ahead.
"It is important to remember that we are a K-12 system of schools. Our feeder Catholic elementary schools have been working diligently to coordinate their curriculum and help all students attain higher levels. We are able to build on the strong foundation set by these schools. As our teachers continue to work collaboratively to ensure rigorous instruction with adequate supports for all students, we are hopeful that our efforts will continue to bear good fruit in the years ahead."
