Since its inception in 2019, the Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies has created more than 40 new courses and offered many of them multiple times. Heading into its eighth year, the Institute is gearing up for its largest variety of study and formation opportunities this fall, including several first-time offerings. Registration is now open.
The “New Creation” certificate in Biblical studies is a two-semester program designed to immerse students in the study of Sacred Scripture from Genesis to Revelation (all 73 books), equipping them to read, understand, pray, live and teach God’s Word. The class is held Mondays, 6:30-8:30 p.m., beginning Aug. 24. It is available in person, live online, and by video.
Elementary Biblical Hebrew is a two-semester course that prepares people to read and study the Old Testament in its native tongue, beginning with the Hebrew alphabet and moving progressively toward an appreciation of the various features in the biblical text that make the language a beautiful medium for divine revelation. The class is held Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m., beginning Sept. 1 and is available in person only. This course is partially funded by a generous grant from the Diocese of Lincoln.
“Two Testaments, One Body: Finding the New Testament Church in the Old Testament” is a five-week course exploring how both Testaments are intended to inform one’s conception of the Church, with special attention to how the apostles relied on the Old Testament to shape their understanding of the community Jesus came to establish. The class is held Wednesdays, 6:30-8:00 p.m., Sept. 2 through 30. It is available in person, live online, and by video. Thanks to a grant, this course is offered free of charge to the first 25 registrants.
“Feminine Genius in the Gospel Of Mark” is a five-week course that focuses on four women who appear in Mark’s Gospel and who demonstrate keen insight into the person of Jesus and his gospel mission, with a view to exploring their contributions in connection with JPII’s reflections on the dignity and role of women in the kingdom of God. The class is held Wednesdays, 6:30-8:00 p.m., Oct. 21 through Nov. 18. It is available in person, live online, and by video. Thanks to a grant, this course is offered free of charge to the first 25 registrants.
“Biblical Books with Feminine Titles: The Stories of Ruth, Judith, and Esther” offers three separate four-week courses in one semester, observing the ways in which God works through the ordinary and the everyday (Ruth), through the heroic chastity and bravery of a virgin (Judith), and through providential coincidence and divine reversal (Esther). The class is held Thursdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m., beginning Sept. 3, Oct. 8 and Nov. 12. It is available in person and by video. Thanks to a generous grant from the diocese, these three short courses are offered free of charge.
In keeping with the Church’s call and Bishop James Conley’s recently released pastoral plan, “One Heart in Christ,” all of God’s people are encouraged to pursue opportunities such as the courses for lifelong growth and deeper formation in the faith.
