Retreat for catechists Oct. 19-21

Theme: ‘Truth and the Gift of the Spirit’

WAVERLY (SNR) - A unique retreat for men and women with a collaborative set of presentations by Matt Simmons and Father Andrew Heaslip will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House near Waverly Oct. 19-21, entitled “Truth and the Gift of the Spirit.”

The presenters will focus on how the fruitful communication of Truth depends not only on knowledge but, in a special way, on the gifts and charisms of the Holy Spirit. A book they recommend for those wanting to spiritually grow in their relationship with the Holy Spirit is “The Sanctifier” by Archbishop Luis María Martínez.

The Oct. 19-21 “Catechists Retreat” is intended for all who are called to proclaim the Gospel (i.e., everyone) and especially for those involved in catechesis whether at home, CCD or in Catholic schools.  Individual spiritual direction and prayer will be available on the retreat.

Walt Del Vecchio of St. Mary Parish in Ashland, has attended this retreat before.

“I always feel a need to refocus on the spiritual aspect of religious education for my class and set aside the distractions of everyday life,” he said.

“The retreats have always come through with the redirection that I need. I pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to assist me in my catechist role.”

Betsy Hoxmeier, of St. Mary Parish in Orleans agreed.

“The quiet get-away really boosts my inner peace and desire to share my faith with my students,” she said.

Presenter Matt Simmons is native to Lincoln and married, with four children. Matt was a convert to the faith in 2008. He is the director of evangelization for the Office of Spiritual Formation of the Diocese of Lincoln, and president of Sacred Heart Ministries, where he provides spiritual formation in the diocese and beyond.

Father Andrew Heaslip was ordained in 2009 and currently serves as the diocesan director of religious education and coordinator of digital media with residence at St. Mary Church in Lincoln. He is finishing up an advanced degree in the New Evangelization at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, Mich.

Upcoming retreats at Good Counsel Retreat House near Waverly will be held Oct. 25-28 for women, “Spiritual Exercises with Regnum Christi”; Nov. 2-4 for men and women with Father Craig Doty, “Jesus, Please Heal Me”; and Nov. 16-18 for men and women with Father Sean Kilcawley, “Learning to Love from the Beloved Disciple.”
