Lourdes Central wins state title

NEBRASKA CITY (SNR)  – The academic decathlon team from Lourdes Central School in Nebraska City placed first in the Very Small Schools category at the state competition Feb. 15-16 at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

They were also state runner-up in the Small Schools Division, and in the Super Quiz competition, Lourdes Central placed second in the Small School division and third overall. 

The Lourdes Academic Decathlon Team is coached by Mrs. Tammy Partsch and Mr. Tom Dinville.

Academic Decathlon students are tested across the curriculum under the umbrella of a theme that changes each year. The theme this year was the 1960s. Students study various aspects of the theme to prepare for competition which includes tests, speeches, interviews, and the Quiz Bowl.

Lourdes Central students won numerous individual awards including eight gold medals, 12 silver and 11 bronze. Catherine Shawhan was the team’s top scorer, Grant Draus (varsity) was silver medalist in the Small School Division Top Scorer category and Ethan Roberts (scholastic) was a bronze medalist in the Small School Division Top Scorer category.

Lourdes Central opened in1861 and serves 360 students in grades preschool-12. It is supported by nine diocesan parishes in southeast Nebraska.
