A new statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus was installed at St. Mary Church in downtown Lincoln Sept. 15.

The 6-foot statue, of Carrera marble, was placed in a niche on the west exterior of the church. The statue is a continuation of the parish’s ongoing “Opening Doors to the Heart of St. Mary” restoration project.

Renovations to the church, dedicated in 1911, began a year ago, with repairs and waterproofing on the west side of the church. A new confessional was installed inside, as well. The parish is now ready to begin the second phase, to replace the church’s heating, air conditioning and electrical systems. The campaign for the second phase aims to raise $2.5 million.

The third and fourth phases will include other repairs, restoration and preservation of the interior and exterior of the church building.

St. Mary Church served as the cathedral for the diocese until 1965. Located across the street from the Nebraska State Capitol building, the church has long been a draw for Capitol visitors, Husker fans, or those attending downtown events. Visitors fill many of the church pews during both daily and weekend Masses.

Members of the Polivka family, who donated the statue, were present to watch the installation.
