Nebraska City middle-school youth group resumes meetings

NEBRASKA CITY (SNR) - After a two-year absence, the Catholic Middle School Youth Group is back in action.

A group of 50 students met for the first time Saturday, Aug. 23. The evening began with Mass followed by food in the St. Mary’s church hall.  Assistant pastor Father Michael Ventre then gave the students a witness talk on the Sacrament of Confirmation.  This was followed by a water fight on the Lourdes football field.

The evening closed by candlelight in the outdoor grotto, with praise and worship music provided by Kate Roberts, assisted by Kaylee Easter and pastor Father Mark Cyza.

Father Cyza spoke about how the group got started again.

“We had a really great middle school group,” he said, “but when some of the parent volunteers retired because their students were no longer in middle school, we were not able to keep it going.

“Thankfully,” he continued, “this year, Barb Stukenholtz was willing to take a leadership position. She was able to organize parents and other volunteers for the evening. Everything really went well.”

The group is open to all middle school students in the Nebraska City area.  The next event will be held Oct. 18.
