Priest and teacher join summer fun with ‘Wiffle ball Wednesday’ at parish

LINCOLN (SNR) – Father Justin Fulton, assistant pastor at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln, and Mr. Scott Svatos, junior high teacher at Cathedral School, held ‘Wiffle ball Wednesday’ at the school playground July 13.

The casual event invited all children of the parish to stop by for a Wiffle ball game, followed by Adoration, confessions and the regular, daily afternoon Mass.

Father Fulton, who is in his second year serving at the Cathedral, said he was inspired to host the event after children of the area invited him to play ‘cops and robbers’ in the neighborhood one summer evening.

“I had a blast with them,” he said. “That’s what I remember doing, growing up, playing in my neighborhood.”

He took to Facebook to share his enthusiasm and ideas for more neighborhood fun when Svatos volunteered to assist. More than 25 children and some parents showed up for the afternoon of Wiffle ball - “good old American fun,” Father Fulton called it.

The following Wednesday was already filled with Totus Tuus summer catechesis events, but Father Fulton hopes to plan more events as the summer schedule permits.

“There’s so much life here during the school year,” he said. ‘I thought, ‘let’s try to get some of them back for some fun,’ and into the church, too.”
