'God is Savior, Shepherd, King’ March 31-April 2
WAVERLY (SNR) - For 54 years, Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly has offered weekend retreats for men and women to discover the power of silence and escape what Bishop James Conley in his Feb. 10 column called the “age of noise” which is “grinding away at our souls.”
Father Gary Coulter, director of the retreat house, pointed out that in addition to the benefit of having such a wonderful place and so many retreats offered by diocesan priests, the Diocese of Lincoln is also fortunate to have nationally-known retreat masters, such as Sister Ann Shields.
Sister Ann Shields will lead a Lenten retreat at Good Counsel Retreat House March 31 - April 2. The theme will be “God is Savior, Shepherd, King.” She will challenge each retreatant to answer to God: “Are you my Savior? My Shepherd? My King? Am I ready to follow where You lead?”
Sister said she believes there is a major disconnect in the lives of many Catholics: a separation between God’s word and its application to one’s personal and daily life.
“The faith needs to go from the head to the heart,” she said. “It needs to become personal, so that it speaks to me and calls me to change.”
She said she prayed that this retreat for men and women will help people deepen their encounter with Jesus, and through scripture have their hearts set ablaze.
Sister Ann Shields, S.G.L., is an internationally noted conference and retreat speaker, and the author of numerous books on Catholic spirituality, including “Deeper Conversion,” “To Be Like Jesus” and “More of the Holy Spirit.”
She is also host of “Food for the Journey” in cooperation with www.renewalministries.net. The program is heard on Spirit Catholic Radio weekday mornings at 6:25 a.m.
Sister Ann Shields is a member of The Servants of God’s Love, a charismatic religious community in the Diocese of Lansing, Mich. Her recent booklets include “Faith More Precious Than Gold,” “The Mercy of God and the Joy Repentance Brings,” “Captured By Mercy,” and “Hope in the Midst of Suffering.”
Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House offers a peaceful atmosphere of prayer and recollection, situated on a spacious acreage near Waverly. The facility includes 50 single rooms, each with a private bath.
Each retreat includes meditations by the retreat master, and opportunities for silence, prayer, adoration and the Sacraments. Retreats typically begin with a rosary and Mass at 8 p.m. on Friday, and end with Mass on Sunday, followed by lunch.
There are several other upcoming retreats for men or women: FOCUS discipleship retreat March 20-22 with Father Jay Buhman; Healing Retreat March 24-26 with Father Mark Cyza; Palm Sunday weekend April 7-9 with Msgr. Daniel Seiker; and Divine Mercy weekend April 21-23 with Father Christopher Kubat.
