The middle school speech team of St. Peter School in Lincoln recently competed in the “Jeff Jamboree” in Fairbury April 11.
The team started at St. Peter school during the 2023-24 school year. The team’s coach, Mrs. Janice Anderson, said the team was started to teach students to live out 1 Timothy 4:12: “Let no one have contempt for your youth, but set an example for those who believe, in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.”
“They have important things to say, and they do not need to be afraid to say it,” Anderson said.
In the St. Peter Speech Club, the students practice developing skills to build confidence and help them throughout their lifetime.
The skills not only help students learn to think and speak in the moment, but also to speak with authority.
“With Saint John Chrysostom as our patron saint and Saint Moses as our role model,” Andersen said, “we know that God will help us to be His voice. All He requires is a willing heart.”
During the April 11 competition, eighth-graders Rebekah Wilke and Gianna Wesley placed first in duet acting; Wilke also placed first in impromptu speaking and second in persuasive speaking. Eighth-grader Priya Steiner placed first in storytelling; sixth grader Addison Biba placed fourth in storytelling; and sixth-grader Leighten Leahy placed ninth in oral interpretation of humorous prose.
