Pius X Senior Gus Mattern Receives NSAA Believers & Achievers Award

The Nebraska School Athletics Association (NSAA) and sponsor U.S. Bank have named Lincoln Pius X High School Senior Gus Mattern as one of its 2014-15 Believers & Achievers award recipients. Mattern is one of 48 selected among 437 nominees considered to be outstanding leaders within their schools and communities.

Believers & Achievers is a state-wide program designed to give recognition to Nebraska’s outstanding senior students. Mattern was nominated for the award by Pius X Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Tim Aylward. In making their selections, the NSAA considers the nominees’ leadership, community involvement, school involvement, academics and athletics accomplishments.

From the 48 finalists, eight will receive $500 scholarships from U.S. Bank to the college or university of their choice. In addition, Mattern and his fellow awardees will be recognized at NSAA State Championships throughout the 2014-15 activities year, and will be featured on bi-monthly posters that will be sent to each member high school and U.S. Bank branch in Nebraska for display. Mattern is one of only three high school students in Lincoln to earn this distinction.

“I was surprised but felt very honored to be representing Pius X,” Mattern said upon receiving the award. “All of the faculty and staff here are always willing to help me pursue all the goals I have.”

Mattern, son of Ben and Maureen Mattern of Blessed Sacrament parish, is the 6th of 9 children. He currently serves as President of National Honors Society (NHS), and is involved in Pius Ambassadors, the Campus Ministry Leadership Team, Students Organized Against Drugs and Alcohol (SOADA Club), and Brothers of the Beatitudes. His athletics accomplishments include lettering in Cross Country, Track & Field and Basketball.
