Pius X Principal to Sleep on Roof for Hunger Awareness

It appears as though Principal Tom Korta will be spending the night under the stars on top of the Pius X roof on Thursday, November 6th, all in the name of fighting hunger.
For the second year in a row, Pius X won first place in the Southeast Nebraska Student Hunger Drive in the large school category, bringing home a gigantic fork as a trophy and earning a $1,250 prize to go toward next year's drive. Between October 8 and November 3, students collected 13,495 pounds of food in the effort to feed the hungry in our community.

In a contest between teachers and administrators, Korta had pledged that he would sleep on the school roof if he received the most food collected in his name. Korta placed first with 1,000 pounds of food collected, with Campus Ministry Director Molly Milana coming in second with 475 pounds.

Beginning at 7:30 p.m., Pius students and faculty will be gathering on the front lawn to pray a Rosary for the hungry and the homeless. Korta will also be presented with a box full of notes and letters written by Pius X students, faculty and staff, labeled "Postcards from the Edge" for him to read during his rooftop escapade.

The successful drive was organized by the Pius X Student Council and their sponsors Shelly Pick and Jeannie Vaggalis. “The thing that worked the best for us was the teacher challenge,” Pick says. “I am so appreciative of the teachers giving of themselves and the students who rallied behind them.”

Pick says that a great deal of work went into collecting, organizing and delivering the food to the food bank. “Our student council members – especially our officers – really came forward. They did a great job.” Pick notes that approximately half of what Pius X collected will benefit Catholic Social Services, and the rest will be distributed to local area food banks.
