Pius X Marching Band & Color Guard Achieves Highest Pinnacle of Success

Pius X’s 2014 marching band season culminated in the school’s first Division 1 rating in 27 years at the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association (NSBA) State Marching Festival held on October 25 at Seacrest Field in Lincoln. This is the highest rating available to a band at the State festival.

In the month of October, the Pius X Marching Band & Color Guard competed at three marching contests and State competition held in Lincoln. The show titled “Minimally Speaking” featured three songs: Newrhythmics, Layers, and Echos.

The band consistently improved their score from the Capitol City Marching Contest on Saturday, October 4, to the October 25 State festival, where judges rated the bands based on individual music performance, ensemble musical performance, individual visual performance, ensemble visual performance, visual general effect and music general effect. Pius X marching band members were among 1,800+ students representing 20 Nebraska high schools competing at the festival.

“This year’s band is one of the largest ever with 140 members,” Band Director Jared Wilhelm notes. “The band students worked very hard all season and performed well at all marching contests.”

Wilhelm adds that the band performed at a very high level all season, and that feedback received on their performances has been outstanding. “We are so proud of them,” he says. Wilhelm’s assistants are Amy Gammel, Scott Dinslage and Christa Schissel.

The marching band’s next performance will be the Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 7, at 2 p.m. in Bishop Flavin Gym at Pius X High School.
