Pius X Welcomes Potential Students and Parents
More than 350 families braved the cold and snow to attend Pius X High School’s New Student Orientation on Monday, February 2, 2015. Prospective students and their parents visited the school to learn more about the academic, spiritual and extra-curricular activities available to the Class of 2019.
The Pius X Student Council greeted visitors while the band provided entertainment for arriving guests. Principal Tom Korta welcomed families with an opening prayer asking for God’s blessings upon all 8th grade students. Sister Maria Meza and Mickey Tran offered special welcomes in Spanish and Vietnamese, respectively. Translators were available after the presentation to assist in answering questions about the school and provide information about tuition assistance opportunities.
During his presentation, Korta encouraged students to dream big dreams, take time to discern the path God has laid before them, and to use their high school days to draw closer to our ultimate goal of heaven.
Superintendent Father James J. Meysenburg also welcomed those gathered in Bishop Flavin Gym and emphasized the many spiritual opportunities available to Pius X students, including opportunities to receive the Sacraments, attend retreats, and participate in theology classes taught by our priests and religious sisters.
“We had an incredible turnout, especially given the bitter weather,” comments Fr. Meysenburg. “It is always a great joy to see the excitement in these future students at Pius X and their parents!”
Parent Association President Christy Beckman and Student Council President Kylie Tucker also shared their insight into the Pius X experience. Noting that parents are the first educators of our children, Beckman emphasized the many blessings of having her daughter attend Pius X and noted the many opportunities for parents to be actively involved in their child’s education. Tucker reflected on some of her favorite memories as a Thunderbolt and encouraged her peers to become involved in the many activities offered at Pius X.
Guidance Director Jan Frayser reviewed Pius X’s academic performance history and requirements for graduation. She then offered examples of possible class options and schedules and the registration process. Pius X guidance counselors will be visiting area Catholic grade schools in the next weeks to assist students with their registration process and gather needed paperwork. Potential students who do not attend a Catholic grade school are encouraged to contact the Guidance Department to schedule meetings (call 402-488-0931 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. After the presentations, students and parents toured the school and visited booths hosted by various student organizations and athletic teams to further discover the wide range of activities available at Pius X High School. Guests also enjoyed performances by the vocal music department; Thunderettes dance team; and the cheerleaders. The student groups also competed in a friendly contest to reward the group which best demonstrated Pius X’s school spirit while conveying its motto “to restore all things in Christ.” Prizes were awarded to the first and second place winners in each category. The winners were: Most Original - 1st: Passport to Adventure; 2nd: Student Council; Best Represents Club - 1st: Outdoors Club; 2nd: Swimming/Diving; Best Interaction: 1st: Literature Club; 2nd: Youth Ministry.
“We had a wonderful turn-out for New Student Orientation,” notes Pius X Guidance Counselor Shelly Pick. “The students are excited about coming to Pius X and getting involved in as many activities as they can.”
