‘Western Catechist Retreat’ Jan. 20 in McCook

McCOOK (SNR) – The second annual “Western Catechist Retreat” will be held Jan. 20 at St. Patrick Church, 409 East F St., McCook.

The retreat is a one-day event for teachers of CCD and CYO programs, as well as Catholic schools. A similar retreat for catechists is held each year at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly, but since the diocese spans 40 counties over nearly 24,000 square miles, holding this event in McCook makes the experience more accessible to those on the western side of the Lincoln Diocese.

More than two dozen catechists attended the first such retreat in McCook last year.

Father Andrew Heaslip, director of religious education, said the retreat aims to refresh and revitalize catechists’ relationship with Jesus and find fresh inspiration for teaching.

“The more we realize that truth is a Person, so the more revitalized will our relationship with Jesus be,” he said, “the more lively a catechist’s relationship with Jesus, so the more powerfully will they be able to proclaim and teach the truth.”

This year Father Jay Buhman will be the retreat director and has entitled his talks, “Teaching for Conversion.”

Father Buhman, a priest of the Diocese of Lincoln, currently serves as a national chaplain for Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) and has spent the last two years with FOCUS living in Denver. He also established a devotion in honor of St. Monica called “Masses and Tears.” This devotion was created to help and encourage parents who are praying for their children to return to the practice of the Catholic Faith.

Katie Dubas, director of youth ministry for the parishes of the Grant Deanery, said that Father Buhman was the keynote speaker at the regional catechist inservice in Imperial last March, and is looking forward to returning to western Nebraska again.

The Jan. 20 retreat will be held from 9:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (CT). There will be adoration, confession, Mass and lunch provided.

The cost to attend is $10 and registration is available at http://www.lincolndiocese.org/catechist-resources/sponsored-events.
