44th Nebraska Walk for Life Jan. 27

Event to feature author, producer of book and movie ‘Gosnell’

LINCOLN (NRL/SNR) – Nebraska Right to Life will sponsor the 44th annual Nebraska Walk for Life Saturday, Jan. 27 in Lincoln at the State Capitol and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Student Union.

“Nebraska Right to Life (NRL) is humbled to welcome thousands of Nebraskans to the State Capitol to kick off the largest First Amendment gathering of pro-lifers in the state, consistently marching for life since 1974,” said Julie Schmit-Albin, NRL executive director.

The Nebraska Walk for Life is just one of many events state affiliates of National Right to Life hold in January to oppose Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion Jan. 22, 1973. The events tie into the National March for Life in Washington, D.C. Jan. 19.

“Keynote speaker Ann McElhinney will speak inside the UNL Student Union around 11:45 a.m.,” said Schmit-Albin. “McElhinney is author and producer of the book and movie ‘Gosnell,’ about Philadelphia’s late-term abortionist who is now serving a life sentence in prison for the manslaughter of a woman who died at his hands, and also for the infanticide of three babies he delivered alive and then killed by snipping their spinal cords with scissors.”

Schmit-Albin explained that the Gosnell court case revealed that it was common practice for Gosnell to deliver babies alive and kill them after birth, which is infanticide and not protected under Roe v. Wade.

“It was estimated he killed hundreds of babies in this manner,” she said. “McElhinney and her husband Phelim McAleer pored through massive court files to expose Gosnell’s ‘House of Horrors.’ They are working to release the movie ‘Gosnell’ in theatres around the country and Nebraska Right to Life will work to ensure that larger cities in the state are in the release list.”

A pro-life Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. in St. Mary Church at 14th and K streets.

The Nebraska Walk for Life will begin at 10 a.m on the north side of the Capitol, with K St. closed for marchers’ safety. A brief program will ensue with elected officials and a memorial pink and blue balloon release in memory of the milllions of unborn babies aborted.

Marchers will walk seven blocks to the UNL Student Union where there will be a bake sale, hot beverages and pro-life information tables.

After the keynote by McElhinney she will sign and sell the book, “Gosnell” and the event will conclude by 1 p.m.

“The Nebraska Walk for Life has a long history of being a safe, legal, family-friendly event.” said Schmit-Albin. “Dress warmly, bring the family and stand up for life!”
