‘Deepening your Prayer Life’

Retreat April 20-22 at Our Lady of Good Counsel

WAVERLY (SNR) - Father Benjamin Holdren will lead a weekend retreat for men and women, “Deepening your Prayer Life,” April 20-22 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly.

“When a person is in silence, when you sit down with the Lord, what do you do in the silence?” Father Holdren asked. “This retreat is about moving from a conversation in your head to having a conversation with our Lord.”

To help retreatants move to a deeper level of prayer, Father Holdren will use a variety of sources and pointers from several authors, based on training he received from the Institute for Priestly Formation.

He said he will share from St Francis de Sales’ “Introduction to the Devout Life” and his tips for meditation. He will use the “Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius” in talks about discernment and what to do when desolation tries to knock a person out of prayer.

Father Holdren will also teach retreatants the steps to Lectio Divina necessary to have the word of God as the normal way one hears the voice of God.

Father Holdren said the retreat will be both for beginners and those wanting to go deeper into his or her prayer life.

“It’s for anybody interested in finding a deeper friendship with Jesus in silence,” he said.

“It’s really easy to lose focus on the greatest of all the commandments: to love God with all our heart and to love others as yourself,” he continued. “If we lose focus of that, we miss the purpose of our existence.  A retreat is a way of refocusing on what is most important.  We are renewed in how deeply we are loved by God, and then that love can flow out of us to others.”

Ordained in 2007, Father Holdren is currently pastor at St. Peter and St. Joseph churches in Bellwood, and spent seven years as assistant pastor at the UNL Newman Center. Chaplain and senior religion teacher at Aquinas High School in David City, he previously taught at Pius X High School in Lincoln.

The next planned retreat at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House will be held May 4-6 with Father Anthony Baetzold of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal on “Mary, Mother of the Church.”

Retreats typically begin with a Rosary and Mass at 8 p.m. Friday, and end with Mass and noon lunch on Sunday.
