Self-defense class to be held May 17

LINCOLN (SNR) – A self-defense class will be held at the St. John the Apostle gymnasium, at 76th and Vine streets in Lincoln, Thursday, May 17.

The class will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $50, and participants may pay in cash on arrival. The fee covers the cost of a pepper spray canister and a booklet containing self-defense information.

Instructor Mr. Marc Beller – a fifth-grade teacher at St. John the Apostle School – said the class is appropriate for high school girls and older. As a seventh degree black belt in Taekwondo, he has used his knowledge and training to help women learn “situational awareness” and self-defense techniques that can help them through difficult circumstances.

“We focus on the use of pepper spray as a weapon/deterrent,” he explained, “how to keep potential attackers away from you and what to do if they do attack.”

Beller adds self-defense techniques that are easy to grasp and learn. He conducted a similar class at St. John in March.

“It was well received and the participants felt more confident within themselves.” Beller said.

The May 17 class is open to 14 participants. For more information, contact Beller at 402-276-1700 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
