Thrift store donates $36k toward school renovation

LINCOLN (SNR) – Students from St. Teresa School in Lincoln presented a banner of thanks April 23 to the volunteers who run the St. Teresa Thrift Shop, in gratitude for their recent donation of $36,000 to the school’s upcoming office and faculty restroom renovation project.

The thrift shop, which has been in business since 1983, has contributed to many important projects through the years, such as replacing carpet and fixing concrete in the playground. They also assisted with the renovation of classrooms when the store moved from the school building to its current location at 643 S. 25th St., Suite 1 in Lincoln.

In a message to faculty and staff, principal Sister Anne Joelle explained that over the previous several weeks, it looked like the plans to complete renovation of a new office space and the addition of faculty restrooms would have to halt, due to unexpected costs.

“We learned of additional expenses to remove asbestos and other plans changed, adding up to $92,000,” she said. “I was disheartened, but my morning meditations were from different Psalms… that gave me hope and to trust in God, and He is pulling us through!

“After figuring out how much money we had from several other grants we were close to making it happen,” she explained. “Then I asked the Thrift Shop if they could help with the asbestos removal and faculty restrooms and they donated $36,000!”

Eighth-graders of the school’s student council presented the gift of gratitude to the thrift shop volunteers April 23.

“The St. Teresa Thrift Shop does so much for the needy in our community and they have helped St. Teresa School and Parish in so many ways throughout the years,” Sister Ann Joelle said.

All are welcome to shop or drop off donations. Business hours are Friday 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donation drop-off hours are Monday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon, or during business hours.

The thrift shop can always use more volunteers to sort through donations and work the counter during business hours, Sister Ann Joelle said. To assist, contact Cyndi Vestecka, 402-499-7443.
