Ask the Register: for the hearing impaired?

Q. Does the Diocese of Lincoln have any services for the hearing impaired?

A. The Diocese of Lincoln Catholic Deaf Ministry is assigned to Father Robert Barnhill, a diocesan priest who knows sign language. Father Barnhill is pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Beatrice. Sacramental ministry is available through Father Barnhill. This includes baptisms, funerals, weddings, and some sacrament preparation for Communion and Confirmation.

Unfortunately, there is no designated Sunday Mass in sign language in the Lincoln Diocese. Some Catholic deaf travel to Mother of Perpetual Help Church of the Deaf in Omaha for the Sunday 10 a.m. interpreted Mass as well as deaf community activities.

Ask your local pastor in the Lincoln Diocese for access to any resources for the Catholic deaf. Father Barnhill or some catechists who know sign language can offer help. Father Barnhill reported that the Lincoln Diocese also has a good relationship with the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for licensed interpreters.
