Spirit Catholic Radio has Most Successful Fall Care-a-thon in History

(SNR/KVSS) – The Spirit Catholic Radio Network recently wrapped up its annual Fall Care-a-thon, raising more than $450,000 to cover the operating expenses of the station—exceeding its goal and making this the most successful Fall Care-a-thon in the radio apostolate’s history (the station also conducts a Spring Care-a-thon).

The on-air fundraiser was held Sept. 24 through 28 from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pledges came from listeners in 222 communities in Nebraska and Western Iowa. Spirit Catholic Radio is a non-profit radio apostolate and depends on the generosity of donors and business underwriters to spread the Gospel message throughout the heartland. It costs about $100,000 per month to cover operating expenses that include utilities, salaries, licenses, production, programming, debt reduction and equipment.

"The success of our Fall Care-a-thon would not be possible without the prayers and support of our listeners," said Jim Carroll, executive director of Spirit Catholic Radio. "We are grateful for the opportunity to work together and share the love of Jesus Christ through this radio apostolate."

Many priests and religious from across the coverage area join Spirit Catholic Radio during the Care-a-thon for live interviews, along with lay people representing different organizations like the Knights of Columbus, Diocesan Councils of Catholic Women, youth ministries and pro-life groups.

"Our operational expenses are considerably less than a commercial station of the same size," explained Carroll. "While we’re very frugal in the use of our donor dollars, it’s still expensive to run a radio network."

Spirit Catholic Radio is dedicated to answering the call of the late Holy Father, Blessed John Paul II, for New Evangelization. The organization’s charism--the mission of evangelization--is to broadly employ broadcast media to transmit the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the fullness of the living Tradition as preserved, revered and proclaimed by the Catholic Church for more than 2,000 years.

Spirit Catholic Radio is the area’s only Catholic radio station heard across most of Nebraska, western Iowa and other parts of the Midwest. Spirit Catholic Radio streams online at spiritcatholicradio.com and can be heard on the radio at 102.7 FM in Omaha and Lincoln, 91.5 FM in central Nebraska, 88.3 FM in northeast Nebraska and 90.1 FM in North Platte.
