Bishop Conley to Preside at Advent Liturgy Dec. 15

LINCOLN (SNR) – Bishop James D. Conley will officiate at the annual "Bless the Baby Jesus" Advent liturgy at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ, 3500 Sheridan Blvd. in Lincoln, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m.

The event is open to all. Participants may bring baby Jesus statues from their home crèche and receive a blessing from Bishop Conley.

Organizer Emily Villa of Cathedral Parish said the "Bless the Baby Jesus" liturgy is a beautiful Advent tradition to attend as a family.

"The ceremony includes readings from the Old Testament prophecies," she said, "followed by a special homily from Bishop Conley to guide our families and focus our thoughts in the last weeks of Advent."

She added that the children "are always excited to process forward with the baby Jesus in their hands, awaiting a blessing from the bishop."

She continued, "It really gives each of us a chance to consider, ‘How did this tiny baby change the world? How does his birth change my life?’ These are the memories that we want to give our children!"

Those who come are encouraged to bring gifts of "swaddling clothes" to donate to Birthright for babies in need. New or gently used baby clothes, blankets, lotion, soap and diaper creams are especially needed.

The liturgy will be followed by a cookie reception in the church basement.
