Spirit Catholic Radio Fall Care-a-thon Marks New Milestone

OMAHA (SNR/KVSS) - The Spirit Catholic Radio Network (SCRN) Fall Care-a-thon will be held Sept. 19-23. These on-air membership drives are held semi-annually in the spring and fall to cover the operational expenses of the station, such as utilities, salaries, licenses, production, programming, debt reduction, and equipment.

"It costs about $90,000 a month to run the station," said SCRN Executive Director Jim Carroll. "That’s considerably less than a commercial station of the same size. While we’re very frugal in the use of our donor dollars it’s still expensive to run a radio network."

Many priests and religious from across the SCRN coverage area will be in the studio for live interviews, along with lay people representing different organizations like the Knights of Columbus, youth ministries, and pro-life groups.

"As always, it’s a privilege to have the opportunity to interview the bishops of the Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, and Des Moines dioceses," explained John Soukup, Lincoln/Central Nebraska station director. "Their message of support for this apostolate is gratifying and so important."

Mr. Soukup will be joined by Father Kenneth Borowiak as co-host of the midday shift. Father Borowiak is pastor of St. Michael Catholic Church in Lincoln (Cheney), and a board member of VSS Catholic Communications, Inc.

This will mark the first time the Spirit Catholic Radio Network Care-a-thon will broadcast from the new Omaha Studios at 13326 A Street in southwest Omaha. Thanks to the generosity of several benefactors, SCRN purchased the building which has a more central location and desirable space to welcome listeners and volunteers. The occupancy costs will actually be lower than the old studio location and the network has ownership of the building. An open house will take place during the Care-a-thon.

More than 1,200 pledges were received from listeners last spring who called, sent online donations, or personally delivered their monetary gifts of support. The amount raised, $375,000, eclipsed last fall’s record by more than $25,000.

"Of course, we hope to go over that amount this fall, God willing," said Mr. Carroll. "The Holy Spirit continues to use this apostolate to reach so many people, and then to see their willingness to support... it’s very humbling, as well as a true blessing."

Donations can be made on-line at www.kvss.com or by calling toll-free 855-571-0200.
