Matt Talbot Awarded $100,000 Challenge Grant For Witness to HOPE Capital Campaign Peter Kiewit Foundation to Match Donations

LINCOLN (SNR/MTKO) - Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach (MTKO), Lincoln’s largest provider of free nutritious meals and homeless prevention services to the working poor and homeless, has been awarded a challenge grant for its "Witness to HOPE" capital campaign.

"This news couldn’t have come at a better time," said Susanne Blue, executive director. "Our campaign has stalled since moving to our new location in April of this past year and we remain approximately $400,000 in debt.

"As was anticipated," she said, "we have increased expenses and a growing service population. In a time of higher unemployment and underemployment, Matt Talbot has seen unprecedented first-time users of our services. We will do what it takes to make sure our debt is covered while we continue to serve Lincoln’s working poor and homeless men, women, and children, but every dollar we pay in debt service is a dollar not being spent on homeless prevention and other critical services that Lincoln depends on."

The challenge grant from the Peter Kiewit Foundation will partially fund Matt Talbot’s relocation and facility adaptation on North 27th Street in Lincoln.

"This is a great opportunity to reinvigorate the campaign and reduce the debt we incurred through the relocation," Mrs. Blue said.

Matt Talbot is asking the community to please consider gifts for the Witness to HOPE campaign. A gift of $50 will automatically turn into $100 and will make a tremendous difference in reaching the goal to receive the challenge grant.

The new facility has allowed the organization to be more effective. It offers an expanded kitchen with a walk-in cooler, a large freezer and adequate storage space for donations of food (frequently donations had to be turned away at the former site).

It also has a larger dining room area that seats 175 guests (the former location seated 102).

The new facility also includes a secure place to hold belongings of MTKO volunteers, convenient parking for up to 75 volunteers and guests, appropriate office space for staff members, space for onsite meetings and training, shower and laundry facilities for persons who are homeless, a play room for young guests whose parents are attending outreach programs, and adequate private space for counseling and health outreach services.

Moving to the new location also allowed for a community garden project, green building design, and enhanced recycling efforts.

Gifts can be sent to Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach, "Witness to HOPE," PO Box 80935, Lincoln, NE 68501.Credit card donations can be made online at www.mtkserves.org.
