Catholic Foundation Honors Outgoing Board Members, Announces Grants

LINCOLN (SNR) - The Catholic Foundation thanked its outgoing board members at its quarterly meeting May 12.

Monica Balters, Suzanne Kolterman, Marv Shanahan and Sharon Timmerman will step down from the board of directors June 30. Their term from 2004-10 saw the Foundation’s endowments and funds grow from $24 to $28 million. Bishop Bruskewitz thanked the outgoing members for their years of service and gave a special presentation and award to each member.

At the meeting, the Catholic Foundation also awarded $14,727 to 36 parishes across the diocese for religious education programs through its Grant Program for Parish Religious Education. The Foundation’s Grade School and Religious Education Endowment Fund provided the money for the grant program. The grants are part of $635,100 that the Foundation distributed during the fiscal year. The Grant Program for Parish Religious Education has given a total of $204,927 to parishes in southern Nebraska.

The 36 parishes receiving grants conduct a wide variety of religious education programs and activities. The Foundation places a priority on awarding grants that will enhance a parish’s religious education program and help train catechists. Many parishes request grant support for their summer catechetical programs. Several parishes used their grant money to help pay for the summer Totus Tuus program for elementary and high school students. Other parishes host adult educational programs.

The grant program for parish religious education is an annual opportunity for diocesan parishes to receive money for their religious education programs. Gifts made to the Grade School and Religious Education Endowment Fund help support the program. For more information on the endowment, contact the Foundation at 402-488-2142.
