St. Teresa Thrift Shop in Lincoln Serves Needy, Benefits Parish

LINCOLN (SNR) – The St. Teresa Thrift Shop in Lincoln recently announced its winter clearance sales and invited new shoppers to learn about the volunteer effort to serve the parish and community.

The shop, located on the north side of St. Teresa School at 616 S. 36th St. in Lincoln, has been in operation since 1983. Two rooms hold clothing and one holds miscellaneous items. It is staffed entirely by volunteers and is stocked by donations from the community.

The hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Donations are accepted during those hours, and Mondays and Thursdays.

In a recent interview, Bernita Hruby, a longtime volunteer and past coordinator of the shop said, “The primary goal of the Thrift Shop is to provide free clothing for people in need.” For others, she said, most clothing is priced from 50 cents to $2.

Income generated by the Thrift Shop has provided St. Teresa Parish and School with improvements such as a church elevator, landscaping for the courtyard, a new bell system, windows, student desks, black top for the playground, and tables for the cafeteria.

The shop also uses its income to serve the community. In December 2009 the Thrift Shop donated a decorated Christmas tree to the Heritage League of Lincoln’s annual Holiday Tree of Lights event using angels and ornaments donated by the community. The event raised money for the Child Advocacy Center.
A secondary goal of the shop is for volunteers to work and pray together. The volunteers gather on Mondays and Thursdays to straighten up the shop, but also to pray together, share coffee and visit.

Current coordinator Cyndi Vestecka said the volunteers often mend or launder items that have been donated. She said their efforts help make the thrift shop affordable, and help maintain the store’s appeal as a dignified place for all to shop. It is estimated that more than 1,000 families in need have benefited from the services of the Thrift Shop in the past several years.

Mrs. Vestecka said the volunteers are preparing for the annual winter clearance sale. On March 5 and 6, items are $1 per bag. On March 12 and 13, all items are free. The store will be closed March 19 and 20, and new merchandise will be available March 26-27 and April 2-3.
