LINCOLN (CSS/SNR) – Catholic Social Services’ 11th “Trumpet Fest” will be held Sunday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. in the auditorium at Pius High School, 6000 “A” St., Lincoln.
This year’s event is titled “Trumpet Fest in Honor of Mac McCune.” The local trumpet legend entertained his last audience at the 2014 Trumpet Fest before succumbing to cancer in March.
Event founder and organizer Kevin Murray said McCune always looked forward to participating in the annual fundraising event.
“Mac enjoyed the diversity of the music – from our 14-year-old phenom who has been playing Trumpet Fest since she was 9 and the horn was bigger than she was, to our talented local performers,” said Murray. “He also liked listening to the college and high school students play.”
McCune’s son Brian, who Murray called “a terrific player in his own right,” will come from South Carolina to pay tribute to his dad, playing both as a soloist and doing improv with University of Nebraska-Lincoln trumpet professor Darryl White, also a regular Trumpet Fest performer.
“In the grand old style of collecting donations,” Murray said, “hats will be passed through the audience. All proceeds go to Catholic Social Services, which helps the needy – irrespective of religious affiliation.”
