WAVERLY (SNR) – All women are invited to discover the life-giving power of God’s word in the Scriptures with a 24-hour retreat at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat in Waverly May 5-6 with Sharon Doran.
Sharon Doran serves as the teaching director of Seeking Truth Catholic Bible Study. The study was commissioned by the Archdiocese of Omaha in response to John Paul II’s call to the New Evangelization as well as Pope Benedict XVI’s exhortation for all Catholics to study scripture.
“On this retreat we will open up the Old Testament Book of Ruth,” Doran said. “The liturgical timing is fitting to prepare us for Pentecost. The Jewish faith had Pentecost long before Catholics did. They called it Shavuot and read the Book of Ruth in their Hebrew lectionary. Come and see why.”
She continued, “We will discover fascinating relationships between women: mothers-in-law, daughters-in-law, romance, loss, loyalty and redemption. We will meet a deliverer in Boaz who points us to Jesus, our New Covenant bridegroom.
“Come, beloved daughters of the New Jerusalem,” Doran said. “Come and see His great love for you through the eyes of this biblical heroine Ruth! She is a woman of noble character!”
The two-day retreat starts Friday, May 5 with Mass at 7 p.m. and an 8 p.m. talk. It concludes Saturday with supper at 6 p.m. Women of all ages are invited.
Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House offers 50 single rooms, each with a private bath, and a peaceful atmosphere of prayer and recollection, situated on a spacious acreage near Waverly. Each retreat includes meditations by the retreat master, and opportunities for silence, prayer, adoration and the sacraments.
Other upcoming retreats will be April 21-23, Divine Mercy with Father Christopher Kubat for men and women, and June 8-11, a Eucharistic Adoration retreat for men and women.
