Pius ‘Give to Lincoln Day’ funds to benefit salaries, expansion

LINCOLN (SNR/PX) - A gift to Pius X High School in Lincoln on “Give to Lincoln Day” will continue to promote the growth and expansion of high-quality Catholic education in the Lincoln community.

Give To Lincoln Day is a 24-hour event that encourages everyone to contribute to Lincoln and Lancaster County nonprofit organizations through a single, online giving platform May 18. It is coordinated by Lincoln Community Foundation, in partnership with local nonprofit organizations. Every donation makes a bigger impact on Give To Lincoln Day because nonprofits also get a proportional share of a $350,000 match fund.

Pius X employs more than 150 teachers and staff members and experienced record enrollment this year with over 1,275 students. Donations to Pius X on Give to Lincoln Day will help improve faculty salaries and create a new classroom addition to accommodate the growing enrollment.

Pius 2016 graduate Moira Koenig recalled that she “began to look back fondly on my time at Pius X several weeks before I had even graduated. The staff and administration did a wonderful job of making Pius feel like a home away from home and I felt completely prepared to take on all the challenges of college.”

The Class of 2016 earned an average ACT score of 24.5 with approximately 16% of graduates scoring a 30 or higher. Graduates regularly praise the relationship between teachers and students at Pius X as one of their main inspirations throughout their educational experience. One of the top strategic initiatives implemented by Pius X leadership involves creating a wage structure that fairly compensates teachers and brings salaries within 90% (aggregate) of Lincoln Public School teachers. The first $106,000 of Give to Lincoln Day proceeds will support this mission.

The desire for a strong, affordable Catholic Education has driven Pius X’s enrollment to record numbers and led to a proposed $5.5 million classroom expansion project. The 13-classroom expansion will provided needed space for growth and ensure that no student desiring a Catholic education will be denied. The addition will include CAD (Computer aided design) and industrial arts shop and classroom space; a family and consumer science classroom; an art classroom, work area and kiln; two conference rooms, two commons areas and learning centers, a teacher workroom and ensemble room for fine arts.

Last year during Give to Lincoln Day, Pius X raised more than $162,000 and more than $14,000 from the challenge grant. A tax-deductible gift of any amount helps Pius X claim a percentage of the $350,000 matching gift sponsored by the Lincoln Community Foundation and Give to Lincoln Day sponsors.

Give to Lincoln Day begins at midnight May 18. Advanced online pledges toward Pius’s $175,000 goal can be made immediately. All advanced pledges are secured and will be held until May 18 and applied to Pius X’s total.

Check donations must be made out to the Lincoln Community Foundation and delivered by hand or by mail to Pius X by 3 p.m. Thursday, May 18. The Pius X Foundation will also be glad to pick up checks from homes and business. A 3.5% donation booster option exists that enables a donor to cover the processing fees that Pius X would otherwise pay.
