Summer’s Eve Celebration

By Fr. Christopher Kubat

I am happy to announce that on Sunday, June 24, Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska is having our fifth annual St. Francis Summer’s Eve Celebration. It will be on the Spirit of Brownville Riverboat (on East Main Street, Brownville) once again from 5 to 7 p.m.

[Editor's Note: due to inclement weather, Summer’s Eve Celebration has been rescheduled to Sun. July 22.]

As in previous years, all of the proceeds will support the charitable work of Catholic Social Services in the southeastern portion of the diocese of Lincoln.  It will be a dinner cruise on the Mighty Mo.  What is more delightful than cruising up the river, watching beautiful scenery, and eating a delicious meal while talking to interesting people?

There will be a half dozen beautiful silent auction items, including a meal prepared by myself and my administrative assistant. We will offer a multicourse dinner of the food from the Bible, authentic Holy Land cuisine.

We have done several meals like this so far and cannot tell you how incredible it is!

Cash donations from the faithful support our mission in helping families and individuals avoid homelessness and helping others out of homelessness. Our St. Francis Gift & Thrift Store allows people to purchase furniture, appliances and other household goods at reasonable prices and the profits are in turn used to help those who come to us in crisis.

One of our latest additions to our emergency services is our St. Clare Food Pantry. Last year, nearly 23,000 pounds of food were distributed to 1,550 individuals and 502 families in need. This frees up money in the monthly budget so people who are living paycheck to paycheck have more money to use for other items like rent, utilities, an unexpected medical emergency, or an auto repair. All in all, since we opened our Auburn office, Catholic Social Services has provided $1,757,602 in total services in the entire southeastern area of Nebraska.

There are corporate and individual sponsorship opportunities available for those wishing to ‘jump on board!’ Individual tickets, while they last, are $35. Space is limited to 100 attendees. Attire is ‘casual river wear.’ If you are unable to attend, you may still make a donation by sending it to Catholic Social Services, P.O. Box 30425, Lincoln, NE 68503-0525 or donate at online.

I hope to see you June 24, at 5 p.m. on the Spirit of Brownville Riverboat. If you are unable to attend, please pray for the success of this event, and for good weather. St. Francis, pray for us!
