Saints Peter and Paul, Abie

PCCW Activities

  • The Altar Society has an annual Rummage and Bake Sale, monthly coffee and rolls after mass, plays Bingo at the nursing homes in David City, hand quilts a quilt for their fall raffle, and helps with the annual Duck and Ham Dinner.
  • They support Catholic Social Services (CSS) projects, support the annual LDCCW Diaper Drive, collect items for the St. Gianna House, collect food for the annual Food Pantries, help make baby quilts for Birthright and CSS, and support two children in Latin America with cash donations.

Historical Highlights

  • Saints Peter and Paul church was organized in 1816, noteably the first and oldest Czech parish in Nebraska. It was built where the present cemetery is now.
  • In 1890 the church was too small so a new one was built.
  • On June 18, 1918 the church was destroyed by fire.
  • The present day brick church and was built in the town of Abie and dedicated in 1920.
  • The church is currently undergoing a complete renovation.
  • There are 65 Families

St. Wenceslaus, Bee

PCCW Activities

  • The Altar Society assists the St. Wenceslaus Annual Chicken Dinner, including homemade goods, such as kolaches, strudel, and rosettes; and a raffle to raise funds to improve our parish and fund LDCCW activities.
  • Other fund-raising activities include a food concession stand at the Bee Annual Consignment Sale.
  • There are monthly coffee & rolls after mass and a Christmas Party for the Parish.
  • The Altar Society helps serve funeral dinners.
  • We support Catholic Social Services (CSS), the annual LDCCW Diaper Drive, and collect items for the St. Gianna House.

Historical Highlights

  • Land near Bee was purchased in 1909 and it was designated as St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.  This provided the impetus to build a church and begin a parish.
  • The Church with the aid of volunteer labor, at a cost of $8000, and the first mass was celebrated in 1910.  Bee was designated as a mission of Dwight, Assumption Parish.
  • In 1918, St. Wenceslaus received its first resident pastor.
  • In 1959, fund-raising began for a parish center that included a new church.  Ground-breaking began in 1962 and the Church as dedicated in 1963 by Bishop James Casey.
  • Since that time, improvements have been made, including the grotto of the Blessed Virgin Mary, blessed by Bishop Bruskewitz in 1998.

St. Joseph, Bellwood

Historical Highlights

  • St. Joseph Church in rural Bellwood was built in 1887. It was served by the priest from Luxemburg (Bellwood Presentation Parish) until 1913.
  • From 1913 to 1935, St. Joseph was a mission of St. Peter Bellwood.
  • In 1935, St. Joseph Parish was attached to St. Mary of Pilzno until 1958.
  • In 1958, St. Joseph's was attached to Presentation Parish of Bellwood until late 90s and then they were made a mission of St. Peter Bellwood.
  • In 1946 a social hall was built.
  • In 1954 a new brick church was built. While the church was being built the hall was used as the church.  It has been redecorated several times.
  • In 2007 the church was totally renovated: pews removed and refinished, flooring refinished, new lights, statues liturgically painted, walls and ceiling painted, central air and heat added. 

Presentation Church, Bellwood

PCCW Activities

  • The altar society helps with 3 fund raisers: the pancake supper, the steak fry, and soup supper.
  • Help with the Bingo at the nursing homes in David City, help serve funeral dinners.
  • Support CSS, St. Gianna House, make quilts for Birthright and CSS, and support the annual LDCCW diaper drive.

Historical Highlights

  • Presentation Parish held their Masses in a sod house in 1874.
  • In 1878 The Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary was built.
  • In 1891 a larger church was built and 3 months later destroyed by fire. The church was built in its place and dedicated in August of 1891 and remains in use today. The church has 12 beautiful stained glass windows of the 12 Apostles.
  • A grade school was built in 1906. In 1916 a new "Marietta" School (little St. Mary) replaced it.  A high school was added in 1925 and continued on till 1961. The grade closed in 1970.

St. Peter, Bellwood

Altar Society Activities

  • St. Peter's PCCW supports Catholic Social Services, St. Gianna House, Birthright, the Pregnancy centers, the Annual LDCCW Diaper Drive, sponsor a child at Catholic Near East, and have an Advent Baby Shower for Birthright.
  • Activities include funeral dinners, Bingo at the nursing homes, make quilts for the homeless, hand quilt a king size quilt for our soup supper raffle, help at parish soup supper, an ice cream/pie stand at the county fair, help with the stands at Bellwood Daze.

Historical Highlights

  • St. Peter's Church in Bellwood was built in 1889 and designated as a mission of Saint Mary's in Luxemburg (Presentation Parish).
  • In 1905 the church was enlarged an additional 30 feet. In 1913 Saint Peter's was raised to the status of an independent parish. In 1915 a two story frame rectory was built.
  • In 1967 a new brick church, social hall and chapel were constructed.
  • In 1988, in honor of the Marian Year, a beautiful grotto dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary was constructed south of the church.
  • In 2012/2013 a new ranch style brick rectory was built by the Industrial Class students in Aquinas High David City. An attached garage, full basement and some of the interior was completed by some of the parishioners.

Holy Trinity, Brainard

PCCW Activities

  • Supports CSS, St. Gianna Home, Birthright, local food pantry, missions, seminarians, LDCCW Diaper Drive, and Advent Baby Shower
  • Quilters provide quilts and blankets for Veteran’s Homes, CSS, Genesis House, Blue Valley, local charities, and shut-ins
  • Helps the parish with CCD classes, the annual chicken dinner and funeral dinners
  • Provides Bingo for residents at the David City Nursing Homes and monthly Bingo for senior citizens in Brainard
  • Recognizes World Marriage Day and presents couples married over 50 years with a breakfast and flowers
  • Serves meals during the Red Cross Bloodmobile, helps with annual Community Fund Drive, makes donations to Post Proms, and provided food for BRAN in David City, 2016
  • Serves coffee and rolls monthly after weekend Masses
  • Decorates the Klein Center and plans annual Celebration of Gratitude
  • PCCW officers are on the Council Women of the Eucharist and serve on the Holy Trinity Parish Council

Historical Highlights

  • Holy Trinity parish of Brainard was organized in 1884 and the first church built in 1888.
  • With parish growth Fr. Alois J. Klein built a larger church in 1908, a brick Gothic style church was built with a 109 ft steeple.
  • In 1916 a parochial 3 story school was built - with declining enrollments the school closed in 1974 and was dismantled in 1981.
  • In 1928 a beautiful brick and stone rectory was built and dedicated by Msgr. Klein.
  • An extensive remodeling project of the church, rectory and school was done in 1949.
  • In 1970 the high altars, communion railings and many statues were removed as part of the liturgical changes of Vatican II.
  • Groundbreaking for the Msgr. A. J. Klein Parish Center took place in June of 1987 and was completed in 1988.  (Msgr. Klein served as pastor of the parish for 56 years.)  The brick parish hall is used for CCD classrooms, meetings, parish dinners, and other functions
  • In 2009 a major church restoration was undertaken with High Altars, new floors and carpeting, and new statues.

St. Anthony, Bruno

PCCW Activities

  • The PCCW helps with food drives for Catholic Social Services, items for St. Gianna House, diapers for the annual LDCCW Diaper Drive, and have an advent Baby Shower for Birthright.
  • They help with Bingo at the nursing homes in David City, have a dumpling day and make over 3500 dumplings for the annual parish Duck Dinner, have bake sales and food stands to raise money for the PCCW.
  • Officers are installed in conjunction with their Christmas party and catered meal.

Historical Highlights

  • The St. Anthony of Padua church was built and dedicated in 1899. In 1901 a rectory was built by the farmers.
  • In 1903 the church was destroyed by a tornado.  For some time Holy Mass was offered in the Bruno Public School.
  • A new church was completed in 1905, but in 1907 lightening struck the tower of the New Church and caused extensive damage which was repaired by the men of the parish.
  • In 1949 a new rectory was built.
  • In 1972 the church needed repairs and was suggested by Bishop Flavin to build a new one (the present one) and was dedicated Sept. 7, 1975.
  • The interior was re-decorated in 1999 to prepare for their parish centennial celebration.

Assumption (Appleton), David City

PCCW Activities

  • The PCCW is involved in Catholic Social Services collections of food, the LDCCW Annual Diaper Drive, and supports St. Gianna’s House.
  • They help make baby quilts for Birthright and CSS, hold an Advent Baby Shower for Birthright.
  • They play Bingo at the nursing homes in David City, help with the annual Soup Supper, and host coffee and rolls.

Historical Highlights

  • David City Assumption (Appleton) was originally established in 1877 as St. Mary Church in Appleton. It was the third Catholic Church built by the Czechs south of the Platte River.
  • A severe windstorm destroyed the Church in 1890.  A new larger Church was built and dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1891.
  • In 1922 a rectory was built.  Since 1969 Assumption Parish has been a mission of St. Mary’s David City.

St. Francis (Center), David City

PCCW Activities

  • The altar society volunteers playing Bingo at the nursing homes.
  • Their main fund raiser is the Annual Spaghetti Dinner, the last Sunday in Sept. serves 1800 people.
  • They serve the banquet for the Aquinas High School Prom and also operate a lunch stand at the Butler County Fair.
  • They donate items for the St. Gianna House, Catholic Social Services, the Gold Rush at Aquinas High School, support the Annual LDCCW Diaper Drive, make a quilt for their raffle.
  • They also have a monthly coffee and rolls, help purchase candles and missalettes for the Church.

Historical Highlights

  • St. Francis Church was built in 1879, a rural parish near David City.
  • Fire destroyed churches in 1905 and 1914.
  • The present brick church was built in 1916, and the rectory in 1923, and the hall in 1930.

St. Mary, David City

PCCW Activities

  • The altar society helps with their annual turkey dinner fundraiser
  • Bingo at the nursing homes in David City
  • Support CSS with collections of groceries and household items, the annual LDCCW Diaper Drive, food pantry collections, and collection of items for the St. Gianna House

Historical Highlights

  • First constructed in 1877, a new church (the present one) was built in 1911 and remodeled in 1964 and 1989.
  • A high school was built in 1952 and closed when they joined Aquinas Central Catholic High School in fall of 1962.
  • The new rectory was also built in 1952.

Assumption, Dwight

PCCW Activities

  • The altar society helps with fund raisers: Soup Supper in the spring, Pork and Dumpling Dinner in July, Soup Dinner and Boutique in the fall.
  • They play Bingo with the senior residents in Dwight, and help with the Bingo at the nursing homes in David City.
  • They contribute to Catholic Social Services, items for St. Gianna House, the LDCCW Annual Diaper Drive in October, and make baby quilts for Birthright, Catholic Social Services, and St. Gianna House.

Historical Highlights

  • Dwight Assumption was started in 1899 and a small church was erected. 
  • Between 1910 and 1936 a new brick (present church) was built and a school was erected, a parish hall was built and grottos were constructed.
  • In 1962 the school was closed and sold to the village.
  • In 1996 the parish hall collapsed from a heavy rainstorm.  A new parish hall (present hall) was built in 1999.

Ulysses, Immaculate Conception

Historical Highlights

  • Ulysses residents built a 40 x 25 church dedicated on Dec. 15th, 1883 and named Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
  • In 1892 the small church no longer served the growing congregation, so they built a larger church 90 x 40 which was completed in 1893 for the cost of $5,328.
  • On Jan. 30th, 1949 a fire broke out after communion and the church burned to ashes.  Fr. Maurice Downey rescued the Blessed Sacrament and the Sacred Vessels.
  • The new church of light grey buff brick was built and dedicated by Bishop Kucera on Oct. 30, 1950 and cost $140,000.
  • The parish underwent remodeling in 1969 as result of Vatican II when all high altars etc. were removed.
  • In 2014 a lot of interior decorating was completed and at present are remodeling the kitchen of the basement hall.

Shelby, Sacred Heart

PCCW Activities

  • Sacred Heart Altar Society is called the St. Ann's Guild.
  • They play Bingo with the nursing home residents, support Catholic Social Services, LDCCW Diaper Drive, Birthright and St. Gianna House
  • They help with parish dinners, host a Spring Salad luncheon for the community, Advent Baby Shower, and host monthly coffee and rolls.

Historical Highlights

  • The first church and rectory were built in 1898.
  • A second rectory was built in 1917 and a new brick church (the present church) was built in 1930.
  • In 1940 the old church was dismantled and the materials were used to build a church hall.
  • In 1954 a convent and school was built. The school continued until 1968 and closed due to a decline in enrollment.
  • In 1990 the hall was removed and at present the church dinners are held in the American legion Hall.
