I find myself reflecting on a best friend and father-figure who profoundly shaped my life: Msgr. Robert Roh (1939-2022). As I look back on our three-decade-long personal and professional relationship, I’m struck by how deeply his influence continues to resonate in my life and faith journey.
Msgr. Roh arrived at Falls City Sacred Heart in 1988, during my third year as a teacher and coach. From the first moment I met him, I knew he was someone extraordinary. He didn’t come in quietly; indeed he never really did anything quietly. A man on a mission, almost bigger than life, he was intense and hardworking. He exuded an aura of purpose and dedication that would come to define his tenure at our school and parish.
Msgr. Roh had an unwavering commitment to excellence in all aspects of life. He approached his roles as superintendent and pastor with a fervor that was both inspiring and challenging. Whether it was implementing school uniforms despite initial resistance, or ensuring our teachers received health insurance, he consistently demonstrated that doing the right thing often requires courage and conviction.
His leadership style was a testament to his faith in action. Msgr. Roh didn’t just preach about Catholic values; he lived them out in his daily interactions and decision-making. He showed me that faith isn’t just about what happens within the church walls but how we conduct ourselves in every aspect of our lives—be it in the classroom, on the sports field, or in administrative meetings.
One of the most impactful aspects of Msgr. Roh’s influence on my faith was his approach to education. He viewed Catholic education not just as an academic endeavor but as a holistic formation of young people in faith, character, and intellect. His passion for this mission was infectious, inspiring me to see my role as an educator and coach through a deeper, more spiritually significant lens.
Msgr. Roh’s love for athletics taught me valuable lessons about integrating faith into all areas of life. He showed me that competition could be a vehicle for character development and spiritual growth. His presence at games and his interactions with students, referees, and opponents exemplified how to live out one’s faith, even in the heat of competition. He was a great motivator, teaching perseverance even in the most difficult conditions.
Perhaps most importantly, Msgr. Roh taught me about the power of presence. Just as he rarely missed a school event or activity, he was there for every significant moment in my life—from my parents’ funerals to my children’s baptisms and graduations. His consistent presence in times of joy and sorrow demonstrated the true meaning of pastoral care and Christian community.
His approach to death and funerals profoundly impacted my understanding of faith in the face of loss. Msgr. Roh had a gift for addressing the painful reality of death while emphasizing the hope and joy of resurrection. This perspective has deeply influenced how I view mortality and the promise of eternal life.
Msgr. Roh’s impact on my faith extended beyond the formal aspects of religious practice. He showed me that faith is lived out in the ordinary moments of life—in conversations during long car rides, in the care shown to colleagues and students, and in the pursuit of excellence in our daily work.
His legacy continues to shape my approach to leadership at Sacred Heart School. The lessons he imparted about integrating faith into every aspect of school life guide me as I strive to maintain and build upon the strong Catholic identity he fostered.
As I reflect on Msgr. Roh’s influence, I’m reminded that faith is not static but a journey of continuous growth and service. He challenged me to deepen my faith, to live it out more fully, and to pass it on to others through my words and actions. My family and I wouldn’t be who we are today without him.
In remembering Monsignor Robert Roh, I’m filled with gratitude for the way he shaped my faith and life. His example continues to inspire me to live out my Catholic faith with passion, integrity, and dedication to service. The impact of his faith-filled life endures, reminding me daily of the profound difference one person can make when they fully commit to living out their calling.
