Homework Outline
This class looks at the traditional Four Last Things: Death, Judgment, (Purgatory), Heaven and Hell. Death is defined as the separation of the soul from the body, after which, the soul undergoes the particular judgment of Jesus for his/her thoughts, words and deeds throughout life to determine one’s eternal fate. The Scriptural story Jesus told of Lazarus and the rich man highlights these concepts. There will also be, however, a general judgment at the end of time as reflected in Jesus’ words of the last judgment recorded in Matthew 25. The article of faith which we profess in the “resurrection of the body” is then discussed in light of the resurrection appearances of Jesus in His own glorified body. The dogma of Purgatory is then discussed, recognized as an aspect of God’s mercy in allowing further purification for the two-fold effect of sin. Indulgences are defined in this context as well. Next, the reality of hell is examined and the loss that these souls experience. Details about hell as revealed to St. Faustina are included. Finally, the class concludes with a presentation on the unending bliss of heaven and the joy of the Beatific Vision for which every soul is created. A homework outline is provided for student notes.
